     "I was near treading on a small fierce rattle snake different from any I had ever seen."
       One man in the party killed another of the same kind which Lewis examined and carefully described in detail.  This was a prairie rattler which was new to science.
--- this was at the same camp as the one where the fire almost burned up their lodge.

The Expedition stayed at Camp Chopunnish longer than they did any other place except their winter forts at Mandan and Clatsop.  They were at Chopunnish from May 14 through June 10 waiting for the snow to melt in the Rockies Mountains, but they never named their camp.  Elliot Cous dubbed it "Camp Chopunnish" in 1893.
