The Expedition stayed at Camp Chopunnish longer than they did any other place except their winter forts at Mandan and Clatsop. They were at Chopunnish from May 14 through June 10 waiting for the snow to melt in the Rockies Mountains, but they never named their camp. Elliot Cous dubbed it "Camp Chopunnish" in 1893.
